My background straddles biomedical and health sciences, the science of science, and complex systems. I use scientometrics and data science tools to ask questions about equity in health research and technology development. I graduated from the National Autonomous University of Mexico in 2016 with a degree in Health Policy and Management, receiving the “Alfonso Caso” Medal for being the best PhD graduate of my generation. After a year and a half of teaching at the UNAM Faculty of Medicine, where I taught courses in public health, sources of health information and complex epidemiological systems, I received a postdoctoral fellowship from the Humboldt Foundation to conduct research in Berlin, Germany, on the structure, dynamics and financing of research on CRISPR genome editing technologies. I am currently doing my second postdoctoral research stay at KU Leuven in Belgium since December 2021, where I investigate the evolution of health research funding in the European Union and the United States. Beyond publications and academic recognition, my greatest achievement as an interdisciplinary scientist has been the impact that my discoveries have had on the formulation of research and innovation policies by international organizations such as the European Parliament and the Food and Agriculture Organization.
