Microbial ORFans are different...really different

Are mathematical models of evolution truly illuminating for understanding biology? There is a lot of skepticism on this, and much of it is probably quite sound. And yet, sometimes a model yields a result that is highly unexpected but seems to make considerable sense in retrospect. And, as perhaps with most exciting discoveries, it comes by serendipity.
